Eight US presidents have died in office, four from natural causes and four from assassination. The four presidents who died from natural causes were William Henry Harrison, Zachary Taylor, Warren G. Harding, and Franklin D. Roosevelt. William Henry Harrison was the first US president to die while in office, only one month after his inauguration, from complications of what at the time was believed to be pneumonia. Zachary Taylor also died in office, at the White House, on July 9, 1850, after suffering a stomach illness that was likely cholera or some other gastrointestinal illness. Warren G. Harding suffered a heart attack and died on August 2, 1923. Franklin D. Roosevelt died as a result of a cerebral hemorrhage on April 12, 1945, just after beginning his fourth term in office.

The four presidents who died from assassination were Abraham Lincoln, James A. Garfield, William McKinley, and John F. Kennedy. Abraham Lincoln was the first US president to be assassinated, on April 15, 1865. James A. Garfield was assassinated on September 19, 1881, after serving only 200 days in office. William McKinley was assassinated on September 6, 1901, and died eight days later. John F. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963, in Dallas, Texas.
