Cesar Chavez was a civil rights, Latino and farm labor leader, a community organizer, and social entrepreneur. He was born on March 31, 1927, near his familys small homestead outside Yuma, Arizona. His family lost their farm during the Great Depression, and they became migrant farm workers. Cesar finished his formal education after the eighth grade and worked the fields full-time to help support his family. He became an icon for organized labor and leftist groups in the U.S. and posthumously became a "folk saint" among Mexican Americans. Cesar Chavez was known for his work as an organizer of migrant American farmworkers and a co-founder with Dolores Huerta of the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA), which later merged with the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee (AWOC) to become the United Farm Workers (UFW) labor union. He emphasized direct nonviolent tactics, including pickets and boycotts, to pressure farm owners into granting strikers demands. He imbued his campaigns with Roman Catholic symbolism, including public processions, Masses, and fasts. Cesar Chavez and the union sought recognition of the importance and dignity of all farm workers. He succeeded through nonviolent tactics such as boycotts, pickets, and hunger strikes.
