Dr. Sadao, after deciding not to hand over the wounded American soldier to the authorities or leave him to die, performs surgery to save his life. However, facing the risk of punishment for harboring an enemy, he informs a General who promises to send assassins to kill the soldier secretly. When the assassins do not come, Dr. Sadao devises a plan to help the soldier escape. He provides the soldier with food, clothing, a boat, and instructions to row to a nearby uninhabited island where a Korean fishing boat can pick him up, ensuring the soldier's safe escape rather than leaving him to die or be captured.
