when did alaska became a state

Alaska became a state on January 3, 1959. It officially became the 49th state of the United States on that date after the Alaska Statehood Act was signed into law by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on July 7, 1958. The law was the culmination of many years of effort by prominent Alaskans and supporters in Congress to achieve statehood for Alaska.
