Osama bin Laden was killed on May 2, 2011, shortly before 1:00 a.m. Pakistan Standard Time (May 1 at 20:00 UTC) during a U.S. military operation called Operation Neptune Spear in Abbottabad, Pakistan. The mission was carried out by U.S. Navy SEALs and was authorized by President Barack Obama. Bin Laden was identified and killed in a raid that lasted about 40 minutes, after which his body was taken for identification and then buried at sea.
