Babies generally start to lift and turn their heads around 1 to 2 months of age, especially during tummy time. Significant head control, meaning they can hold their heads up without support, usually develops between 3 to 5 months of age. By about 4 months, babies can often hold their head and chest up while leaning on their elbows while lying on their tummy, and by 6 months, they have most of the head control they need.
Supporting babies' heads is important during the early months until they develop enough neck strength. Tummy time is highly recommended to help strengthen the neck and back muscles essential for holding their heads up.
