when do cats lose their baby teeth

Most kittens start losing their baby teeth at around 3 to 4 months of age and finish by about 6 to 7 months. By the time a cat is roughly 6 months old, it usually has a full set of 30 adult teeth.

Typical age range

Most sources group kitten teething into a window from about 3 to 4 months, when the first baby teeth begin to fall out, up to around 6 to 7 months, when most or all adult teeth have come in. Some cats take a little longer, reaching 8 to 9 months before every adult tooth has fully erupted.

What actually happens

Baby incisors (the small front teeth) are usually the first to be replaced, followed by the canines and premolars over the next couple of months. Many owners never see the shed baby teeth because kittens often swallow them while eating or lose them during play.

When to see a vet

If a kitten is older than about 7 months and still has obvious baby teeth beside adult teeth, a vet visit is recommended to check for “retained” baby teeth. Also contact a vet if there is heavy drooling, bad mouth odor, or difficulty eating, as these can signal dental problems beyond normal teething.
