The "9/11" attacks occurred on September 11, 2001. This was the day when 19 terrorists hijacked four commercial airplanes in coordinated Islamist terrorist suicide attacks by al-Qaeda against the United States. Two planes were flown into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, the third into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and the fourth crashed in a field in Pennsylvania after passengers intervened. The attacks caused nearly 3,000 deaths and major destruction, leading to significant global consequences including the U.S. War on Terror.
