The United States Constitution was drafted during the summer of 1787 in Philadelphia by delegates to the Constitutional Convention. It was signed on September 17, 1787. The Constitution then underwent ratification by the states and became the official government framework when New Hampshire became the ninth state to ratify it on June 21, 1788. It has been in operation since 1789.
