The First Fleet left Portsmouth, England, on May 13, 1787, and arrived in Botany Bay, Australia, in mid-January 1788. After finding Botany Bay unsuitable, the fleet moved northward to Sydney Cove, where they established the colony on January 26, 1788, a date now celebrated as Australia Day.
