when was the quartering act

The Quartering Act was passed by the British Parliament on May 15, 1765. It required the American colonies to provide housing and basic necessities to British troops stationed in the colonies. Additionally, a second Quartering Act was passed in 1774 as part of the Coercive Acts (known in the colonies as the Intolerable Acts). This act expanded the British authority to house soldiers in unoccupied buildings and, controversially, allowed governors to quarter troops in private facilities if necessary. The first Quartering Act expired in 1767, and the 1774 Act remained in force until March 24, 1776.
