Windsor Castle was built by William the Conqueror starting around the year 1070, shortly after the Norman Conquest of England in 1066. The construction took approximately 16 years to complete. Originally built as a wooden motte- and-bailey structure, it was later replaced and expanded with stone fortifications. It is the oldest occupied castle in the world and has been continuously used since its construction in the late 11th century.
