The Caesar salad originated in Tijuana, Mexico, created in 1924 by Caesar Cardini, an Italian immigrant restaurateur. He invented the salad on July 4, 1924, at his restaurant Caesar's in Tijuana when the kitchen was running low on ingredients during a busy holiday rush. Cardini used what was available—romaine lettuce, Parmesan cheese, lemon juice, olive oil, eggs, Worcestershire sauce, and croutons—tossing the salad tableside for customers. There are some claims that his brother Alex or one of his employees may have contributed to the recipe, but the consensus credits Caesar Cardini with the original creation of the salad during the Prohibition era when many Americans crossed into Mexico to enjoy food and drink without restrictions.
