Pete Hegseth served as an infantry officer in the United States Army National Guard. His service included deployments at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Specifically, he served at Guantanamo Bay with the New Jersey Army National Guard, was deployed as an infantry platoon leader in Baghdad, Iraq, and later served as a civil affairs officer in Samarra, Iraq. He also taught counterinsurgency tactics at the Counterinsurgency Training Center in Kabul, Afghanistan. Over his military career, he held roles in the Minnesota Army National Guard and the District of Columbia Army National Guard, rising to the rank of major and receiving several military honors including two Bronze Star Medals.
