The story takes place at the remote Overlook Hotel, a fictional resort located in the Colorado Rocky Mountains.

Setting in the story

In both Stephen King’s novel and Stanley Kubrick’s film adaptation, the Torrance family spends the winter as caretakers of the isolated Overlook Hotel in the Colorado Rockies, where they are cut off by heavy snow. The hotel’s seclusion and violent history are central to the haunting events that unfold there.

Real-world inspiration and filming

For the book, King was inspired by the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado, where he stayed and imagined the Overlook. For the 1980 film, exterior shots of the Overlook used Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood in Oregon, while most interiors were constructed and filmed on soundstages in England.
