Scabies comes from an infestation of the skin by the tiny mite called Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis. These female mites burrow into the upper layer of the skin to live and lay eggs. The infestation causes intense itching and a rash due to an allergic reaction to the mites. Scabies is contagious and spreads most often through prolonged direct skin-to-skin contact with an infected person, such as during sexual activity or living closely together. It can also spread through contact with infested objects like bedding, towels, or furniture. The condition is worldwide and is not related to poor hygiene but can be more common in crowded or under-resourced areas.
