The Murray River starts in the Australian Alps, specifically near Indi Springs in the southeastern part of Australia. Indi Springs is officially recognized as the source of the Murray River and is located near the Black-Allen line that marks part of the border between New South Wales and Victoria. The source area is in the Snowy Mountains region close to Mount Kosciuszko, Australia's highest mountain. From there, the river flows westward forming much of the border between New South Wales and Victoria before continuing into South Australia and eventually reaching the Southern Ocean.
