The film "Argo" is set in Tehran, Iran, during the 1979 Iran hostage crisis. However, the movie was not filmed in Iran itself. Instead, the filmmakers recreated Tehran and other settings mainly in Los Angeles, California, with additional filming in Istanbul, Turkey, and Washington D.C. For example, locations in Los Angeles such as the Sepulveda VA Medical Center stood in for the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, and the affluent Hancock Park neighborhood in Los Angeles was used to depict the residence of the Canadian Ambassador. Istanbul was used for scenes involving historical landmarks like the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia. The film also used various studios and locations in Southern California to simulate the atmosphere of 1979 Iran and the covert Hollywood movie production that was part of the rescue mission cover story.
