Billy Dunlop is currently still in prison. In March 2025, the Parole Board recommended that he be transferred to an open prison; however, this transfer was blocked by Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood. Dunlop remains in closed conditions in a high-security facility. He has expressed remorse and has been described by the Parole Board as having made progress in reducing the risk he poses, but the government prioritizes public safety and has decided to keep him in a secure environment for now.
