Puerto Rico is located in North America, in the northeastern Caribbean Sea, positioned between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean. It lies about 50 miles (80 km) east of the Dominican Republic, 40 miles (65 km) west of the Virgin Islands, and approximately 1,000 miles (1,600 km) southeast of Miami, Florida. This Caribbean island is the smallest and easternmost of the Greater Antilles and faces the Atlantic Ocean to the north and the Caribbean Sea to the south. The main island is roughly rectangular, extending about 111 miles (179 km) from east to west and 39 miles (63 km) from north to south. The capital city is San Juan, located on the northeastern coast.
