Sri Lanka is an island country located in South Asia, in the Indian Ocean. It lies southwest of the Bay of Bengal and is separated from the Indian peninsula by the Gulf of Mannar and the Palk Strait. The island is situated between latitudes 5° and 10° N and longitudes 79° and 82° E. It shares maritime borders with the Maldives and India. The island has a teardrop or pear shape with mostly flat coastal plains and mountains in the south-central part, with the highest peak being Pidurutalagala at 2,524 meters above sea level. Sri Lanka's legislative capital is Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, and its largest city and commercial capital is Colombo.
