The Appalachian Mountains are a mountain range situated in eastern North America. They extend approximately 1,500 miles (2,400 kilometers) from Newfoundland and Labrador in Canada, southwestward through the eastern United States, to central Alabama. The range crosses 15 U.S. states including Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama. The range also extends into Canadian provinces including Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Québec (in part). The highest peak in the range is Mount Mitchell in North Carolina at 6,684 feet (2,037 meters).
