The country is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the north and the Caribbean Sea to the south. It shares a land border with Haiti to the west and maritime borders with Puerto Rico to the east across the Mona Passage. The capital city is Santo Domingo, situated on the southern coast. The Dominican Republic's coordinates are approximately 18.7°N latitude and 70.2°W longitude, placing it in the northern and western hemispheres, part of the North American continent geographically.
