Stephen King has said the primary real-world inspiration for the Overlook was The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado, a historic hotel near Rocky Mountain National Park.
For the 1980 film directed by Stanley Kubrick, the exterior of the Overlook was filmed at Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood in Oregon, while the interior sets were built in England and drew heavily on the design of the Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite National Park.
