The “Shining hotel” usually refers to two different real places, plus the fictional one in the story.
Stephen King’s inspiration
Stephen King was inspired by The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado, a historic hotel in the Rocky Mountains near Rocky Mountain National Park. This is a real 140‑room hotel that now advertises its connection to The Shining and offers themed tours.
Hotel seen in the movie
In Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 film, the exterior of the Overlook Hotel is actually Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood in Oregon. The interiors were built as sets in England and were partly modeled on the Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite National Park, not on a single real hotel.
Fictional Overlook Hotel
Within the story itself, the Overlook Hotel is a fictional resort located in the Colorado Rockies. It is described as a large, isolated mountain hotel that closes for the winter season, which is central to the plot.
