Zohran Mamdani was born in Kampala, Uganda, and is of Indian origin. He moved to the United States with his family at a young age (around seven years old) and later became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2018. He has built his career as a housing counselor and a Democratic Socialist politician, serving in the New York State Assembly since 2021 and winning the mayoral race in New York City in 2025, making him the city’s youngest mayor and the first Muslim and Indian-origin person to hold the office. His parents include filmmaker Mira Nair and scholar Mahmood Mamdani.
