Mesopotamia was a historical region located in West Asia within the Tigris- Euphrates river system. It roughly corresponds to the territory of modern Iraq and also includes parts of northeastern Syria, southeastern Turkey, southwestern Iran, and Kuwait. It is situated in the northern part of the Fertile Crescent and is considered the cradle of some of the world's earliest civilizations. The region is defined by its location between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, extending from the area north or northwest of Baghdad down to the Persian Gulf. It includes Upper (Northern) Mesopotamia, covering parts of southeastern Turkey and northeastern Syria, and Lower (Southern) Mesopotamia roughly corresponding to southern Iraq near the Persian Gulf.
