Martin Luther King Jr. was shot on April 4, 1968, at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. He was standing on the second-floor balcony of the motel when he was fatally shot. The shot was fired from a bathroom window at the rear of a rooming house across the street at 422 1/2 South Main Street, from where the assassin, James Earl Ray, took aim using a rifle. King was rushed to a hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after the shooting.
