The Battle of Passchendaele took place on the Western Front during World War I, from July to November 1917. It was fought for control of the ridges south and east of the Belgian city of Ypres in the West Flanders region of Belgium. Specifically, the battle centered around the village of Passchendaele (now Passendale), which lies on the last ridge east of Ypres, about 8 kilometers from the railway junction at Roulers (now Roeselare).
