The ancient city of Troy was located at the site known today as Hisarlık in northwest Turkey. It stood near the Dardanelles Strait, a key strategic point connecting the Aegean Sea to the Black Sea through the Sea of Marmara. This location is in the region historically called the Troad in northwestern Anatolia. Troy was an important city on trade routes between Europe and Asia and has a history going back to around 3600 BC. The archaeological site of Troy, with its layers of ancient cities built on top of one another, is now a UNESCO World Heritage site and a significant archaeological site open to the public.
