The Incas were located primarily in the Andean region of South America, with their empire centered in modern-day Peru. Their capital was Cusco, in present- day Peru. The Inca Empire, also known as Tawantinsuyu, extended across vast territories including parts of modern Ecuador, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, and Colombia. The empire stretched along the Pacific coast and Andean highlands from the northern border of Ecuador down to central Chile, covering diverse geographic features such as the Andes Mountains, coastal deserts, and some areas near the Amazon jungle. The region was characterized by mountainous terrain with key cities and important sites like Machu Picchu situated on mountain ridges in Peru.
