You place the candles in one direction and light them in the other.
Basic rule
You always light from the left side to the right side , lighting the newest candle first , using the shamash (helper candle).
How to set it up
- When you put the candles in, you add a new candle to the left each night , so you are placing candles right to left as you face the menorah.
- Because the newest candle is always on the left , you start by lighting that left‑most candle and then move to the right.
