Google was created by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, two graduate students at Stanford University. They started the project in 1996 with a search engine initially called "BackRub," which used a revolutionary algorithm called PageRank to rank web pages by their relevance based on backlinks. They officially founded Google Inc. on September 4, 1998, in a garage in Menlo Park, California, after securing initial funding from Andy Bechtolsheim and other investors.
