Java was created by James Gosling, a Canadian computer scientist, in the early 1990s at Sun Microsystems. He led a team that initially started the project in 1991, originally naming the language "Oak" after an oak tree outside his office. The language was later renamed Java after a type of coffee. Gosling designed Java with principles such as robustness, portability, and platform independence. He also implemented the original compiler and virtual machine for the language.
