Penicillin was discovered in 1928 by the Scottish physician and bacteriologist Alexander Fleming. He found that a mold called Penicillium notatum produced a substance that killed bacteria, which he named penicillin. Fleming's discovery marked the beginning of the antibiotic era, although he was unable to purify and mass-produce the drug himself. Later, a team of scientists at Oxford University, including Howard Florey, Ernst Chain, and Norman Heatley, developed methods to purify and mass-produce penicillin, making it a widely used medicine during and after World War II.
