The World Wide Web (WWW) was created by Sir Timothy John Berners-Lee, an English computer scientist. He invented the Web in 1989 while working at CERN, the European Particle Physics Laboratory. Berners-Lee wrote the first proposal for the Web in March 1989, developed the first web browser and web server, and published the first website on December 20, 1990. He also developed the fundamental technologies of the Web, including HTML (Hypertext Markup Language), HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol), and the URL system (Uniform Resource Locators). His work laid the foundation for the modern Internet and he made the Web freely available to the public to enable its rapid expansion and development.
