who discovered detroit

Detroit was discovered and founded by the French explorer Antoine Laumet de La Mothe Cadillac. He established a fort on the site on July 24, 1701, which was called Fort Pontchartrain du Détroit, and this later became the city of Detroit. Cadillac led the expedition with about 100 Frenchmen and was instrumental in setting up this strategic trading post and settlement in what is now Michigan.
