who discovered scandium

Scandium was discovered by Swedish chemist Lars Fredrik Nilson in 1879. He isolated scandium while analyzing the minerals euxenite and gadolinite and named it after Scandinavia, the region where the minerals were found. This discovery confirmed the earlier prediction by Dmitri Mendeleev of a then- undiscovered element he called "ekaboron".
