The modern bra was invented by Mary Phelps Jacob, also known as Caresse Crosby, in 1914. She created the first modern brassiere as an alternative to the restrictive corsets of the time by fashioning it from two silk handkerchiefs and some ribbon. She patented her design as the "Backless Brassiere" and later sold the patent to the Warner Brothers Corset Company, which made it a popular and widely used garment. However, it is important to note that earlier versions and patents of bra-like garments existed, such as one by Marie Tucek in 1893 and the first modern "corselet-gorge" by Herminie Cadolle in 1889 in France, but Mary Phelps Jacob is credited with the invention of the first modern bra as commonly known today.
