Cotton candy was invented by dentist William J. Morrison and candy maker John C. Wharton in 1897. They created the first machine that melted sugar and spun it into thin strands, which they initially called "fairy floss." Their invention was introduced to a wide audience at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair, where it became very popular. The machine worked by melting sugar crystals and forcing the liquid sugar through a wire screen using compressed air, spinning it into the fluffy texture we know today.
