Google was invented by Larry Page and Sergey Brin. They started working on the project while they were PhD students at Stanford University in 1995. Initially, their search engine was called "BackRub" and used a revolutionary algorithm called PageRank to rank web pages based on the number and quality of links to them. They later renamed the project "Google," inspired by the mathematical term "googol," which signifies the large amount of information they aimed to organize. Google was officially founded as a company on September 4, 1998, with early work done from their dorm rooms and a garage in Menlo Park, California.
