Paracetamol was first synthesized by Harmon Northrop Morse at Johns Hopkins University in 1877. He achieved this by reducing p-nitrophenol using tin in glacial acetic acid. Although others may have contributed earlier or around the same time, such as Charles Gerhardt in the 1850s, Morse is credited with the first reliable synthesis. The drug was first administered to humans about a decade later by Joseph von Mering in 1887.
