The QWERTY keyboard was invented by Christopher Latham Sholes, an American inventor and newspaper editor, in the early 1870s. He developed the layout while working on the first practical typewriter. The key arrangement was designed to reduce jamming of typewriter keys by separating commonly used letter pairings, allowing typists to type faster. The QWERTY design was first sold by E. Remington and Sons in 1874 and remains the standard keyboard layout to this day.
