The World Wide Web was invented by Sir Timothy John Berners-Lee, commonly known as Tim Berners-Lee, an English computer scientist. He developed the web in 1989 while working at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research. Berners-Lee proposed the idea in March 1989 and by 1990 had created the fundamental technologies including HTML, the HTTP protocol, and the URL system. He also developed the first web browser and web server. Berners-Lee made the web freely available, which greatly contributed to its widespread adoption. He later founded the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) to oversee the web's ongoing development.
