Ice cream was not invented by a single person. Its origins date back over 2,000 years with ancient Persia and China creating early frozen treats from snow mixed with fruit juices or milk. The modern form of ice cream evolved over centuries, with key contributions from Italy, France, and other cultures. In particular, three Italians are recognized for creating early gelato in the 16th and 17th centuries: Ruggeri, who made a cold dessert with ice and fruit in Florence; Bernardo Buontalenti, who added milk and eggs to create a creamier mixture; and Francesco Procopio di Coltelli, who perfected the recipe and opened the first gelato café in Paris. The first ice cream cone was patented in 1903 by Italo Marchioni in the US. The hand-cranked ice cream freezer was invented by Nancy Johnson in 1843, which helped popularize ice cream by making it easier to produce.
