The Hope Diamond is currently owned by the Smithsonian Institution. It was donated to the Smithsonian in 1958 by the American jeweler Harry Winston, who had purchased the diamond in 1949 from the estate of Evalyn Walsh McLean, a wealthy American socialite who had owned it previously. Since then, the Hope Diamond has been on display at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. and is part of their permanent gem collection.
