The Vedas are traditionally considered to be apauruṣeyā, meaning "not of a man" or "authorless," regarded as revelations seen by ancient sages after intense meditation rather than composed by a single individual. According to Hindu tradition, the Vedas were orally transmitted across generations before being compiled by the sage Vyasa (Krishna Dvaipayana Vedavyasa), who arranged the hymns into the four Vedas we know today: Rig, Sama, Yajur, and Atharva. Vyasa is also credited with compiling other major Hindu scriptures, including the Mahabharata and the Puranas, but the hymns themselves are believed to be divinely inspired compositions by multiple ancient sages, the Rishis.
