The horse that won the 2025 Kentucky Derby was Sovereignty. Sovereignty was ridden by jockey Junior Alvarado and trained by Bill Mott. The victory marked Mott's second Derby win and was the first Derby win for both jockey Alvarado and the owner, Godolphin, led by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Sovereignty won the race on a muddy track at Churchill Downs, finishing ahead of the favorite, Journalism, by about 1.5 lengths
