why are they called the packers

They are called the Packers because the team was originally sponsored by the Indian Packing Company, a local meatpacking plant in Green Bay. Curly Lambeau, the team's founder and a shipping clerk at Indian Packing, convinced the company to donate money for uniforms and use of their field, so the team was named the Packers after the company. Later, when Indian Packing was bought by Acme Packing, the team was briefly called the Acme Packers before becoming simply the Green Bay Packers.
