Terry Fox ran a total distance of 5,373 kilometers (3,339 miles) during his Marathon of Hope. He ran for 143 days before having to stop outside of Thunder Bay, Ontario, on September 1, 1980, due to cancer spreading to his lungs. This remarkable distance is equivalent to running a marathon (about 42 kilometers or 26 miles) almost every day for nearly five months, despite having lost his right leg to osteosarcoma cancer.
